Who Must Obtain a Business License

Municipal Code

The Vineyard Municipal Code states (see 5.02.020):

It shall be a class B misdemeanor for any person to transact, engage in or carry on any business, trade, or profession, or to operate a vending, arcade, or coin-operated machine without first receiving the type of license required by the municipality.

Please note that registering a business name with the State of Utah Department of Commerce does NOT license a business with Vineyard.

Purpose of Business Licensing

Business licenses are required by law because they enable the city to:

  • Collect its portion of sales tax revenues from the Utah State Tax Commission
  • Ensure public safety by enforcing building and fire codes
  • Maintain a list of currently-licensed businesses for public access
  • Verify that businesses are in compliance with the Vineyard Zoning Code and other laws and ordinances, such as state or county inspection requirements
